Greg Powers was an integral part of Our Place from the beginning; his influence can still be seen everywhere in the bar. Greg was a motivating force in the Indianapolis Community. Greg did not like the spotlight, and as a result, many of his contributions went unnoticed. Greg was involved with 53 groups and organizations (12 nationally). The bar and the DEFA Fund was renamed to honor, celebrate and remember the life of Gregory Powers, a great friend of the Indianapolis Community.
History of Gregs/Our Place
The Gregory R. Powers Direct Emergency Financial Assistance (DEFA) funds different organizations across Indiana. The grants are used to help HIV/AIDS patients with emergency needs such as housing, transportation, food and medical care.

“The Indiana AIDS Fund is the only foundation in the state that provides direct emergency funding to provide crucial services for people living with HIV/AIDS,” said David Suess, Indiana AIDS Fund board president. “The Indiana AIDS Fund is proud to provide its financial support to make sure people can lead their lives with dignity.

The DEFA fund was renamed in January 2002 to honor HIV/AIDS philanthropist Greg Powers. Phil Denton, owner of Gregs/Our Place, and Team Gregs/Metro/Club Indy/ English Ivy's raised $61,038.22 in three months for this year’s (2008) Indiana AIDS Walk & Ride.

“We consider it our obligation to continue Gregs tradition of giving,” Denton said. “Greg wanted to make sure those living with HIV/AIDS had the best quality of life possible. The DEFA fund helps make that possible for Hoosiers most in need.”
DEFA is used to cover utility payments, rent and other housing costs, medical expenses, prescription drug costs, transportation expenses and food and nutrition.

“With the uncertain future of federal housing and assistance programs for persons with AIDS, infected Hoosiers need local agency assistance now more than ever,” Suess said.

The complete list of organizations that received DEFA grants from the Indiana AIDS Fund, and the amount of those grants is attached to this release.

The Indiana AIDS Fund began in 1994 and has become the largest private funder of HIV and AIDS programs in the state of Indiana. It is a fund-raising and grant-making organization dedicated to supporting programs and services that help educate and assist Hoosiers with HIV/AIDS. To date it has provided more than $3.8 million to more than 60 organizations across Indiana.
