Our Place Circa 1980's |
Formerly known as the Wawasee Tavern, Our Place opened on July 1st, 1980. As a patron of this era, you found a one-room cruise bar band restaurant, filled with the sounds of jukebox Country Music, the smell of a good greasy Cheeseburger, and a good stiff drink poured by everybody's friend Dean Gardner or the backup bartender Phil Denton.
On June 1992, the papers were signed and Phil Denton became the second owner. Since this date, many changes and improvements have occurred: walls have moved, state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and video systems have been installed, and many websites have come and gone . . .just to name a few. Our Place has been host to several Leather and Bear Clubs and has been the site of several events including Mr. Indiana Leather, Bear Necessities and Out of Hibernation. Our place also proudly hosts the T.G.I.F. Bowling Classic and the Circle City/Indy Cup Volleyball Tournament. The Halloween "Bag Ladies" bus tour and coronation has also become an annual event.
In June 2002, following the passing of Greg Powers (Phil's longtime friend and confidant), it was decided to rename Our Place to GREGS. In this way, Greg's contributions to the community would not be forgotten. Dance On is an annual event to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Greg. Although years have passed since Greg departed, memories and history continue to be created nightly.
The staff of Gregs/Our Place is proud to be associated with a business that gives back to the community. Our team in the annual AIDS Walk has placed #1 for many years thanks to our wonderful customers and committed staff. Together we have raised over $400,000 for this single event. We have also made significant contributions to Indy Pride, Names Project IN, I.C.L.U., Indiana Youth Group, Damien Center, G/L Switchboard, Justice Inc., Parkview Manor, Indiana Cares/AID Serve and many others. |

Greg Powers was an integral part of Our Place from the beginning; his influence can still be seen everywhere in the bar. Greg was a motivating force in the Indianapolis Community. Greg did not like the spotlight, and as a result, many of his contributions went unnoticed. Greg was involved with 53 groups and organizations (12 nationally). The bar and the DEFA Fund was renamed to honor, celebrate and remember the life of Gregory Powers, a great friend of the Indianapolis Community. Learn more about DEFA Fund |
